The Idiot’s Guide to Foreign Affairs: Monday March 26 through Sunday April 1

Western Europe

24 HOURS: This is the time spent by Nicolas Sarkozy in detention before officially being investigated. Recently, he has been the center of several financial controversies, for instance the Bygmalion and the bugging case. This time, he is suspected of financial bribery with the ex-dictator Mouammar Gaddafi in the context of his 2007 presidential campaign.

41 DAYS remain until the May 12 deadline of the decision by the Trump administration on whether to reimpose sanctions lifted as part of the nuclear deal with Iran in 2015. The recent appointment of the hawkish John Bolton as National Security Adviser and the ouster of the more dove-ish Rex Tillerson from his position as Secretary of State in favor of Mike Pompeo changes the balance within the administration, skewing it towards those who advocate not waiving the sanctions and thereby exiting the accord.

The Saudi government claims to have intercepted 7 MISSILES, after Yemeni Houthi rebels fired on the capital Riyadh. One person died and two were injured by “debris”. This is another escalation in the Yemeni proxy war, which pits Iran-backed Houthi rebels against the Saudi-backed President Hadi.

At 16,500MPH, Chinese space station Tiangong 1 will crash into Earth over Easter weekend. Launched in 2011, the Chinese Space Agency reported loss of control of the Tiangong-1 (Heavenly Palace in English) in 2015.  While the exact location of the crash remains unknown, the out-of-control space station could possibly be found anywhere across Asia, over majority of China and Australia, the entirety of the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia.

97% OF THE VOTES counted in the Egyptian election this week have gone to incumbent President Abdul Fattah el-Sisi, representing a landslide victory. The election received a lower turnout than the previous one held in 2014, with opposition figures calling for a boycott following the arrests and withdrawals of several potential opponents to el-Sisi’s re-election bid. The final result is expected on April 2, but el-Sisi’s victory is most certainly not in doubt.
